One question i get from many of my cosmetic dentistry patients is “What food can make my smile better?”. I thought of writing about it in March since the dietitians of Canada has declared March as the “Nutrition month 2020”. Below are three key food groups that helps your oral health
- Calcium rich foods – Includes Milk, Cheese, Yoghurt and other dairy products and even non dairy food such as Tofu. Canned Salmon, dark green leafy vegetables are also rich in protein
- Vitamin C – promotes gum health so eat lots of citrus fruits such as Oranges, Mandarins (Costco Langley has this easy to peel Mandarins – great for healthy snacking – and no i was not paid by Costco to write this!). Spinach, Tomatoes, Peppers, Potatoes and Broccoli are also rich in Vitamin C.
- Phosphorous – Found in eggs, dairy, fish, lean meat and plant based food like nuts and beans can make your teeth stronger.
You have to be careful with snacking to keep your teeth in good shape. Make sure to brush or wash down with water after snacking. Try to go for healthier snacks such as fruit and avoid chewy sugary type of snacks.
